January 17, 1980:
Lions Mobile Hearing Service Unit comes to Arcola. Staffing the unit will be
local Lions volunteers, headed by Russ Ingrum.
March 6, 1980: Lions
Club President Russ Ingrum to give welcoming address at annual show. Chorus
members included Virginia Vyverberg, Dale Hull, Vivian Hull, Hester Coombe,
Jerry Stout, Jeanette Stovall, Carolyn Snyder, Allan Gray, Harry Keal, Alice
Keal and Harriet Herrington.
August 7, 1980: Bill
Herrington received Lion of the Year award for his achievements in the Arcola
Lions Club and the Arcola community during 1979-80.
October 2, 1980:
Lions President Don Miller, Candy Day Chairman Louis Turner and other Lions
finalized Candy Day plans.
January 1,
1981:Arcola Lions Club delivered food baskets to 36 needy families in Arco1a.
February 12, 1981:
Arcola Lions Club recently donated $550.00 to Arcola Telecare.
March 19, 1981: Lions Club to secure eye donor
pledges.
July 2, 1981: New
Lions Club officers for 1981-82 are Larry Stovall, President; Louie Turner,
First Vice-President; Jack Sphar, Secretary-Treasurer; Bill Snyder, Lion Tamer;
Mark Faler, Tail Twister; and Jim Jenkins, Jim Clark, Jim Ghere and Bill
Coombe, Directors.
March 18, 1982: Mark
Petty to be master-of-ceremonies for Lions Club variety show. The program
includes songs by Lions Club Chorus under the direction of Ron Vyverberg.
May 6, 1982: Bill
Herrington honored by Arcola Lions Club. The new addition to the Arcola Scout
Cabin will be dedicated to Herrington for his service to the Arcola Lions Club
and to the community. Lions President Larry Stovall made the presentation.
June 3, 1982: Don
Woods named to Lions State Board of Trustees.
March 10, 1983:
Lions to present “Minor Misadventures” with welcome to be given by President
Louis Turner. Ron Vyverberg will be directing the chorus, and Jerry Stout will
serve as master-of-ceremonies.
August 11, 1983:
Bill Herrington nominated for District Lion of the Year. Jerry Stout named Lion
of the Year for the Arcola club for the 1982-83 year. Stout was also installed
as new president.
September 29, 1983:
Arcola Lions Club is sponsoring a drive to collect used eyeglasses: which will
later be repaired and used by the needy.
April 5, 1984:
Arcola Lions presented it annual variety show, featuring “Broom Corn County”
skits.
January 3, 1985:
Member of the Arcola Lions Club distributed Christmas baskets of food and toys
to needy families Christmas Eve. The baskets were given to 60 families and
distributed by approximately 30 Lions members. Jerry McCoy was chairman of the
event.
June 20, 1985:
Charter Lions Dale Hull, Bill Herrington, Harry Keal, George Dilliner, John
Connor and Bob Coombe were honored with lifetime memberships in the local
service club at their recent meeting. President Bill Snyder welcomed a ladies
night crowd of 102 at the dinner meeting and program recognizing the
Thirty-Eighty anniversary of the Arcola Lions Club. Zone Chairman Donnie Miller
served as master-of-ceremonies for the program. Bill Vyverberg “roasted” the
charter members. Past District Governor Chuck Towle and President -Elect Bill
Coombe presented the six and their wives with plaques, membership cards and
pins.
March 13, 1986:
Shammy Shambarger and Bob Brehm were crowd pleasers at Lions annual show,
“Let’s All Be Kids.”
September 18, 1986:
President Eugene Shambarger attended Charleston Jamboree to organize Candy
Days.
January 1, 1987:
Lions who assembled on Christmas Eve to deliver food baskets to the needy were
Floyd Miller, Bill Coombe, Joe Hunter, Dave Herrington, Eugene Shambarger, Mark
Nacke, C.W. Chancellor, Larry Shafer, Louis Turner, Tom Blagg, Bill Snyder, Jim
Jenkins and Bill Herrington.
March 12, 1987:
Arcola Lions Club presented two nights of comedy madness and music.
April 2, 1987:
Arcola Lions Club recently named C.W. Chancellor Lion of the Year.
April 30, 1987: Lions representative Joe Hunter is pictured
with Milton Otto, who the Lions will sponsor at Boys’ State at Eastern Illinois
University at Charleston.
May 21, 1987: Arcola
Lions Club is offering free eye check for g1aucoma.
June 22, 1987:
Kenneth H. Reveal is installed as President of Arcola Lions Club.
July 2, 1987: The
original members who formed the Arcola Lions Club on February 25, 1947, met
again for the Chapter’s 40 year anniversary at the Arcola United Methodist
Church on Tuesday, June 23, 1987. Charter

September 24, 1987:
Lions were on the prowl recently at the Charleston Inn in Charleston, Illinois,
as they assembled to develop plans for their Fifth annual Candy Day. Attending
the Jamboree was Arcola Lions Assistant John M. Lutz, Secretary/Treasurer
Joseph S. Hunter, Vice President C.W. Chancellor and District 1-E Camp Lions
Chairman John W. Hove with District Governor James Harbaugh.
December 31, 1987:
The Arcola Lions Club again delivered food baskets and toys on Thursday,
Christmas Eve, to a1most 90 needy families in the area. Among the Lions Club
volunteers were: Dean Cole, Ken Reveal, Todd Hunter, Jerry Furlong, Allan Gray,
Curtis Atteberry, Louis Turner, Dave Gilbert, Russ Ingrum, Dave Herrington, Rex
Willison, Larry Shafer, Bill Herrington , and Eugene Shambarger.
March 10, 1988: The
Arcola Lions Club Chorus provided music between comedy at the Lions Variety
Show on March 4-5 in the Arcola High School auditorium. The chorus was directed
by Ron Vyverberg and accompanied on piano by Elaine Gardner.
March 10, 1988:
Mark Nacke, sitting in an undersized truck, spins a colorful yarn with backup
singers Dale King and Rick Edwards. It was just one of several wild scenes
during the 41st Lions Club Variety Show on March 4-5.
January 5, 1989: The
Arcola Lions Club distributed food baskets to the needy in the Arcola area on
Saturday morning, December 21, 1988.
March 9, 1989: The
Arcola Lions Club donated $110.00 to the American Lung Association’s Jr. League Bowl -A-Thon at the French
Embassy. Pictured is Joe Hunter,

March 16, 1989: Robert
C. Coombe receives the Lion of the Year Award from son Bill Coombe. The Arcola
Lions board of directors voted the award to the elder Coombe for his many years
of accomplishments with the organization.
November 2, 1989:
Curtis Atteberry of the Arcola Lions Club serves chili to Dave Gordon. The
organization held its annual chili supper in the high school cafeteria prior to
the Arcola-Arthur football game on Friday, October 20, 1989.
November 2, 1989: Don Miller, of the Arcola Lions Club
and Region No. 4 Chairman in District 1-E, was awarded the International
President’s Certificate of Appreciation at the District 1-E Convention in
Charleston on Saturday, October 21,1989. International Director Bill Webber of
St. Albert in Alberta, Canada made the presentation.
